“Willing to try it again tomorrow?” Karen asked as we walked to our cars.

“Definitely. I’m going to have to get back to the lab for at least a couple of hours, but he’s got me hooked now. It’s hard to deny the connection between what those hikers found in Frenchman Bay and what he uncovered in Los Alamos and Cambridge.”

“I agree, although it only takes us to the early sixties,” Karen pointed out. “I guess we’ll see how much further he can carry the story tomorrow.”

“And whether there’s something more about Ellen,” I added as we reached Karen’s car. “Meantime, it’ll be getting late by the time we get home. Do you want to stop and get something to eat on the way? Or just heat up the leftover stew when we get there?”

“Stew and an early night sound good to me.” She gave me a kiss and got in. “Race you home!”

As usual, I couldn’t keep up with her. But that was okay. When I made it to our house on Drakes Island an hour later, Rosie was at the door to greet me with her usual welcome-home display of affection. And Karen already had a pot of stew on the stove and was waiting for me with a glass of Oban, my favorite single-malt scotch. I petted Rosie, kissed Karen, and the three of us sat on our deck and looked out at the ocean while the sun set, and the stew warmed up.

And while I tried to imagine what Carlson had to tell us tomorrow.
